This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.

While perhaps not at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.

“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”

This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.

“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”

Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
