The Reze Arc Movie Tops Domestic Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend

Did Sony done it again? Following the box office performance of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed more than $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100M milestone internationally, attaining a global total of $108 million during its debut. This movie outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Strong U.S. and International Earnings

Directed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in $18.2M in North America after a robust $5.2 million Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday. Globally, the produced by MAPPA movie earned $14.7 million across 46 international territories, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4M under Sony ($43.1 million overseas, $18.2M in the U.S.). Official totals are still pending from Sony its final earnings figure.

Benchmarks to Previous Successful Anime Films

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, contrasting the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34M in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and debuted with a similar $18M in the U.S.. Reze Arc’s first weekend aligns with that marker, while its $108 million global gross currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will earn the numbers of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a major victory for Sony.

Promotional Efforts Drive Box Office Dominance

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have skillfully used fan engagement to propel their leadership at the anime box office. This film's marketing campaign began at the Anime Expo in LA in summer with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a significant involvement at the New York Comic Con including exclusive clips, fan raffles, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and influencers alike after the last day of the event.

Future Prospects

This year marks a big year for Japanese animation, and for Sony, which has another animated movie releasing in 2025 in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
