Severe Rains Exacerbate Situation for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, Agencies Caution
Intense storms over the past week have intensified the already dire circumstances of the hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the region, according to relief agencies.
"Terrible" Night Creates Serious Threats
A official characterized the previous night's conditions as "terrible", with precipitation so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"The recent weather was exceptionally terrible for the residents. The heavy rains were so powerful... And the winds were so forceful," said the representative.
Authorities voice extreme concern that children living in temporary structures in wet clothing will succumb to hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Fatalities and Extensive Loss
Health authorities have stated that one baby has died from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have lost their lives in building collapses triggered by the severe weather.
Further statements indicate a higher number of casualties. Authorities reported that multiple residential buildings had fully given way and scores had collapsed partially.
- Nearly 55,000 families harmed by rains.
- More than 40 emergency refuges submerged.
- Countless residents required to find new shelter.
Assistance Operations Deemed Inadequate
Organizations have increased distribution of shelter, warm covers and clothing since the truce began, but they have said there is remains not enough aid entering.
"Agencies are operating tirelessly to provide that aid and to hand it out, but the scale of the necessities is so vast that we are faced with many thousands of individuals and children who are genuinely enduring hardship nightly," warned one official.
Long-Term Issues and Ceasefire Plans
The second phase of the ceasefire involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the removal of troops, and other conditions.
Aid groups have stressed the need for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to meet immediate and future requirements."
The hostilities was sparked by an attack in late 2023. Subsequent military operations have resulted in a significant number of lives lost in the territory, according to official data.
