Line of Duty Announced for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
New Character and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
