Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
