Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will personally create this new flavor as part of an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
The recent development intensifies the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism and Recent Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, citing concerns that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
